In the wake of this whole Kim Kardashian fake wedding thing and all the money that was made off the viewers’ emotions and insatiable desire for a peek into the lives of the rich and famous, I’m sure everyone is feeling a bit duped at this point. Watching every moment of the entire two-day saga unfold and even crying when she agonized over how to include her deceased father in her nuptials, many viewers now feel empty and bewildered as they realize that it was just a hoax.

A modern version of the old soap operas, America now has to come to grips with the fact that many reality TV shows are far, far from that. They really should be called “unreality” TV shows since it all appears to be scripted and spliced together to make the public THINK that it’s really happening.

Let’s face it! It’s just entertainment.

We can’t get caught up in their imaginary lives and think that it’s real no more than we can watch all the bone-crushing excitement of professional wrestling and think that it’s real, too! According to Jennifer Pozner, author of Reality Bites Back: The Troubling Truth About Guilty Pleasure TV, “[Kim Kardashian’s divorce after only 72 days] is a brilliant bit of cognitive dissonance, giving viewers the opportunity to recognize how hollow and manipulative reality TV’s fairy-tale narratives really are.”

All innocent fun? Not so much!

It’s just for fun, right?! They’re not hurting anyone. Well, actually, they are. What is means to be beautiful or successful is defined for some women (and impressionable youth) between the commercials of these reality shows. Shaping the way they view relationships, life goals and self image, they can in fact be very dangerous. Ms. Pozner goes on to say that after interviewing 1100 Girl Scouts in a survey, she found that “young women who regularly watch reality TV are more likely than non-viewers to accept and expect a higher level of drama, aggression, and bullying in their lives. They’re also significantly more likely to believe that ‘It’s in girls’ nature to be catty and competitive with one another,’ and that it’s hard for them to trust other girls, and that girls have to compete for a guy’s attention.” All of that from watching reality TV? It may not be real for the people on the show, but it definitely has a REAL impact of some of its viewers.

And, so we watch it. Like a bad train wreck, we watch it. The irony is that even though many people now realize that it’s fake and scripted television, we’ll still watch. If wrestling can still have tons of fans, so can reality TV.
