Five Most Romantic Holiday Getaways
by: Michael Kabel

The holiday season should be filled with just exactly that - holidays! The end of the year is a great time to take off work, forget your responsibilities, and concentrate on yourself and that special someone.

If you're planning a romantic getaway for just the weekend or something more extensive like a honeymoon, you know that making the trip perfect depends on planning and timing. It's not always easy to find the best deals, or even the best places to stay. With that in mind, here are some suggestions for perfect romantic winter and holiday season getaways.

Bed & breakfast in the countryside

What's more romantic than an isolated spot far off the beaten path, where you and your partner can concentrate completely on each other? Depending on where you live, there's usually a quiet spot in the countryside no more than an hour or two away by car.

These jaunts make perfect getaways for couples looking to go and come right back. You can check in on Saturday morning and come back Sunday afternoon, with plenty of time to relax and refocus that evening.

A pleasure cruise to exotic destinations

If you live near the seashore, consider taking a "fun cruise" for a day, weekend, or more. The two of you can enjoy the ship's diversions or just the fun of relaxing in your cabin. These are great for honeymoons in exotic ports of call, too, if you fly into the cruise' embarkation city first. Many of the larger cruises offer dining and entertainment. Some offer additional excursions like helicopter tours of nearby places of interest or hiking and touring the shoreline.

A penthouse in a big city hotel

Heading into the city for a weekend presents all kinds of holiday and romantic opportunities. Renting a room at a sophisticated or historic hotel only makes the experience that much more complete.

Your stay in the hotel will be even better with breakfast in bed and dinner in a cozy restaurant. During the day, you can go shopping, take in the city’s art galleries and attractions.

Spa day together.

The holiday season is likely also a time you and your someone are looking to pamper yourselves. So why not do it together? All-day spa treatments and packages are available on most weekends leading up to the end of the holiday season. They're also a great way to unwind and look great while getting ready for holiday parties, weddings, and other celebrations.

If you're planning a honeymoon, a spa day also makes an awesome filler on the day between the wedding ceremony and reception day and when you depart for the honeymoon vacation.

Just take off.

You don't have to have a destination in mind to have a getaway. Just for the sake of adventure, why not take your partner on a ride somewhere, and see where you end up? Maybe you'll wind up in a small town having lunch in a postcard-perfect café. Or, you might find yourselves in a state park, taking in the lush wintry atmosphere.

Really, the most important thing to remember when planning any trip is to have fun while you're doing it. Don't be afraid to be spontaneous, and don't be afraid to spend a little money. You'll find adventure usually comes when you don't pay too much attention to the details.
